RELIGIOUS
- William Penn
- Pennsylvania was a big name in the Quaker faith and sought out a Haven for Quakers in America
- He advertised freedom of religion in the colony
- Being Quaker meant persecution in England and New England so Pennsylvania was a good escape from the hate
- Quakers were pacifists
- Due to this they refused to have an army of any sort
- They saw all men as equal
- Didn't like to conform
- One reason that they were persecuted in New England was their refusal to submit to authority
- Quakers believe in the "Inner Light" which was their means of communicating with God
Political
- A government based on representatives was established
- All landowners had the right to vote
- There was no tax support going to the state church
- Penn acquiesced all the land from King Charles II because he owed Penn's father a debt
Economic
Social
- This colony was advertised very well
- Pamphlets were distributed in England, Netherlands, France, and Germany
- Land was promised along with freedom of religion and fair government with representation
- The colony sought to repel gentry and bring in yeoman farmers
- The polices pertaining to the land were very generous
- This attracted many immigrants
- These immigrants were comprised of indentured Servants and small farmers
- There were also many carpenters, masons, shoemakers, and other manual workers
- This attracted many immigrants
Geographic
- Middle Colony
- 4th largest colony
- Few ports due to lack of shoreline borders
- Susquehanna River flowed through the colony
- The soil was fertile due to the Northern Glaciers
- The growing season was longer than other colonies due to ample rain and sunshine
- Farming was ideal due to such conditions
- There was easy access to wild life so trapping and hunting were other viable food sources.
